Madonna Won't Get an Oscar Nomination for Best Original Song

Life is a mystery ... and so is awards season. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced 39 songs eligible for nomination in the Best Original Song category at the 84th annual Academy Awards in February, and Madonna's latest track isn't among them. Madge, who directed the upcoming romance 'W.E.' and also wrote the song "Masterpiece" for its soundtrack, received a Golden Globe nomination for the tune last week; unfortunately, her charms were lost on the Academy. (Either that, or AMPAS isn't as prone to star-gazing as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.) While Madonna will stay home on Feb. 26, many other songs will be eligible for a nomination, including three tracks from 'The Muppets,' the Mary J. Blige tune from 'The Help' and the Jonsi song "Gathering Stones" from the 'We Bought a Zoo' soundtrack. Full list ahead. "The World I Knew" from "African Cats" "Lay Your Head Down" from "Albert Nobbs" "Star Spangled Man" from "Captain America: The First Avenger" "Collision of Worlds" from "Cars 2″ "Dakkanaga Dugu Dugu" from "DAM999″ "DAM999 Theme Song" from "DAM999″ "Mujhe Chod Ke" from "DAM999″ "Rainbird" from "Dirty Girl" "Keep On Walking" from "The First Grader" "Where the River Goes" from "Footloose" "Hello Hello" from "Gnomeo & Juliet" "Love Builds a Garden" from "Gnomeo & Juliet" "Bridge of Light" from "Happy Feet Two" "The Mighty Sven" from "Happy Feet Two" "Never Be Daunted" from "happythankyoumoreplease" "Hell and Back" from "Hell and Back Again" "The Living Proof" from "The Help" "Coeur Volant" from "Hugo" "It's How We Play" from "I Don't Know How She Does It" "When the Heart Dies" from "In the Land of Blood and Honey" "Ja Nao Estar" from "José and Pilar" "The Keeper" from "Machine Gun Preacher" "Life's a Happy Song" from "The Muppets" "Man or Muppet" from "The Muppets" "Pictures in My Head" from "The Muppets" "Summer Song" from "The Music Never Stopped" "Imaginary Friends" from "Olive" "Sparkling Day" from "One Day" "Taking You with Me" from "Our Idiot Brother" "The Greatest Song I Ever Heard" from "POM Wonderful Presents The Greatest Movie Ever Sold" "Hot Wings" from "Rio" "Let Me Take You to Rio" from "Rio" "Real in Rio" from "Rio" "Shelter" from "Take Shelter" "Gathering Stories" from "We Bought a Zoo" "Pop" from "White Irish Drinkers" "Think You Can Wait" from "Win Win" "The Backson Song" from "Winnie the Pooh" "So Long" from "Winnie the Pooh" [via MCN] [Photo: AP] Follow Moviefone on Twitter Like Moviefone on Facebook

Weekend Receipts: Sherlock Beats Chipmunks, But Ethan Hunt Wins

Sherlock Holmes may have won the weekend with a modest debut, but was it the real box office winner? Not with Tom Cruise and the Mission: Impossible gang around to flaunt their fab limited release per-screen average in everyone’s faces, a precursor to next week’s Christmastime blitz. And, yeah. The new Chipmunks is out. A moment of silence for all the poor souls who helped it debut in the number two slot. I’d wager even David Cross feels for you. 1. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Gross: $40,020,000 Screens: 3,703 (PSA $10,807) Weeks: 1 It says something that even the rascally sass of Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t enough to bring in blockbuster numbers for Sherlock Holmes 2, Guy Ritchie’s solid follow-up to 2009’s sleuthing adventure. Could it be that posters depicting RDJ and Jude Law breathlessly posing with pistols didn’t quite convey the scope and deliciousness of new villain (and iconic Holmes nemesis) Moriarty? Or: Maybe Warner Bros. should’ve kept a tighter lid on the reveal of Downey in drag, all blue eyeshadow and bonnets? 2. Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked Gross: $23,500,000 Screens: 3,723 Weeks: 1 Movieline’s Julie Miller watched six clips from Chipwrecked and nearly lost her mind; imagine the poor souls who schlepped the kids to the cineplex this weekend and had to watch the entire thing? 3. Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol Gross: $13,000,000 Screens: 425 (PSA $30,588) Weeks: 1 To consider Mission: Impossible 4 a limited release (just under 500 theaters) is laughable considering it’s the biggest movie spectacle of the season - and when I say biggest, I mean IMAX-big. High anticipation for the slick sequel, the sight of Tom Cruise hanging from a skyscraper by his fingertips, and rave reviews should make M:I4 the new release of choice when you and the fam pile into the minivan for some Christmastime movie-watching. 4. New Year’s Eve Gross: $7,420,000 ($24,826,000) Screens: 3,505 (PSA $2,117) Weeks: 2 (Change: -43.0%) The box office allure of Garry Marshall’s ensemble rom-com is already fading, and it’s only week 2. Expect it to become but an auld memory by the time the actual New Year’s rolls around, and let’s all make a resolution to never give these lame pasted-together holiday movies another shot, shall we? 5. The Sitter Gross: $4,400,000 ($17,721,000) Screens: 2,752 (PSA $1,599) Weeks: 2 (Change: -55.3%) There’s a chance Jonah Hill’s babysitting comedy could get a boost this week from his SAG and Golden Globes nominations, which launched the one-time Superbad actor into his very first awards season. Then again, it’s one of the lowest-reviewed new releases in theaters. And if I were Hill, I’d want people thinking more “Awards-Nominated Jonah Hill” than “Yelling Obscenities at Young Children Jonah Hill” right about now. So, yeah… how about that Moneyball? Top Moments: Barbara Walters Touches Trump's "Onion Loaf" and Horror Story's Brutal Birth

Donald Trump and Barbara Walters Our top moments of the week: 14. The Ex Factor Award: Jenny doesn't know how to swim, so the sadistic producers of Fear Factor make her drive a car into water! When she and her ex/teammate Sean exit the car as it sinks, Jenny expects him to help her to dry land. But he doesn't. "He left her! Whoa! She's going under," host Joe Rogan says. The show's diving team rescues Jenny, who is understandably peeved at Sean. "I waited there for you," he says. Er, no, you didn't. And even if you did, she can't swim! 13. Nerdiest Trash Talk: Nothing less than first place on The Amazing Race would have sufficed for perfectionist Cindy and her fiancé Ernie. They eventually win the $1 million, but not before dissing the other two teams during the final leg. "It would be like losing to C students and we're A+ students," she says, a comment neither of them says they remember now. But we all know who the actual "A+ students" of Race were this season: Andy and Tommy - who won six legs before losing last week to "inferior" teams. 12. Most Frightened Baby (Or: Baby We're Most Frightened For) The newest member of the Real Housewives of Atlanta cast is Kim and Kroy's baby K.J., and if only his 1-day-old ears could process the terror around him. Not only has Kim shoved her dog, Chanel, in his face (because yeah, dogs won't bite babies!) and screamed about her aching vagina and K.J.'s surprising first poop, but it turns out that big sis Brielle isn't so fond of him. Watch out for her dagger eyes, K.J.! 11. Worst Christmas Miracle: What's worse than having to tell your boyfriend that you don't love him two days before Christmas? Having your roommate break the bad news without telling you! On New Girl, Nick, thinking Jess and Paul have already had "the talk," breaks his little weirdo heart while trying to comfort him. Would a little "light" choking make you feel better, Paul? 10. Least Suspenseful Cliff-hanger: Less than a month after marring Kris Humphries, Kim Kardashian tells momager Kris Jenner that she's going off birth control so they can start a family on Kourtney and Kim Take NY. Her mom tries to talk her out of it, pointing out that the couple don't even live together. "Yeah, I'm prepared - I'm married," she replies. Kim eventually comes to her senses and tells that she isn't ready for kids... or marriage, as it turns out! 9. Worst Attitude: On Top Chef, Heather is paired with Beverly, aka her punching bag, in a team elimination challenge. When they wind up in the bottom three, Heather decides gripe to the judges about how Beverly spent two days peeling 400 shrimp during the last challenge. Uh, what exactly does that have to do with why you're standing at Judges' Table now? And how does throwing your teammate under the bus in a double elimination help you? Oh, wait, it doesn't. 8. Most Inappropriate Kiss: When Deb's therapist on Dexter floats the possibility that she might subconsciously be in love with her brother, she promptly pooh-poohs her theory. But that night, she dreams that she and Dex share some Chinese food... and then a passionate kiss. Yeah yeah, they're adoptive siblings, but it's still pretty horrifying that Hollywood thinks incest is a hot trend. 7. Weirdest Trip Through Time: After he is visited in his dreams by Chewbacca, Glee's Artie is inspired to create a public-access Christmas special that is two parts Judy Garland and one part Star Wars. (Together at last!) In the charmingly retro black-and-white special, "holiday roommates" Blaine and Kurt welcome their friends to their winter chalet, where everyone breaks the fourth wall in a fashion even Zack Morris would shake his head at. We know Lima, Ohio, is a bit on the conservative side, but does that really mean we have to revert to 1963's holiday traditions? 6. Most Arresting Reunion: Eleven long episodes after Alicia kicked Kalinda to the curb for sleeping with Peter, The Good Wife's power duo reunites when Alicia learns that Kalinda was the one who found Grace and surprises the usually all-knowing private investigator by springing her from jail. Afterwards, Kalinda tries to downplay her hand in saving Grace, but Alicia insists on thanking her and (appears to) at least start to forgive Kalinda for her past indiscretion. Please don't ever fight again, ladies. 5. Best Use of Jazz: The penultimate episode of Homeland's riveting first season goes deep inside Carrie's manic (though not illogical) flight as Saul orders her chaotic Abu Nazir timeline into a neat, color-coded timeline on Carrie's living room wall. Unfortunately, when her CIA bosses catch wind (via Brody) of her classified redecoration scheme, David storms her apartment to place her on administrative leave and confiscate her rainbow-tinted wall of information. As Carrie rages against the intelligence machine, the audio of her thrashing gradually drops out and is replaced by a soothing, but still frenzied jazz number. It's a nice metaphor for Carrie's self-destruction, as we can only helplessly watch her fall, not fully aware of the importance of what she's saying. 4. Indecent (Reaction to a) Proposal Award: Christmas is the time to tell the people you love just how much you care, so Ellen fan Jacob asks her to help him stage a surprise proposal to his girlfriend, Jodi, before Ellen launches her 12 Days of Giveaways segment. Jacob gets down on one knee in front of a weeping Jodi (they look like tears of joy, at least initially). "I can't. ... I'm sorry," Jodi says, and before we can process this shameful public rejection, a Christmas carol that signals it's time for free stuff blares in the studio, the audience rises to its feet and cheers as the cameras cut away from Jacob and Jodi. What the what? It's riveting train-wreck TV, but it's also a big fake-out. It turns out that "Jacob" is an Ellen staff member who staged a similar hoax before last year's first giveaway segment. No wonder Ellen was laughing! 3. Most Hair-Raising Interview: Barbara Walters names Donald Trump as one of her 10 most fascinating people of the year, which is clearly a clever ruse so she can do what every American secretly wants to: touch the Onion loaf that Trump calls his hair. "Is this part of your image or is it covering a bald spot?" she chirps. Trump claims he's always worn the comb-up-over-back-and-around look and challenges Walters to give it a yank to test its veracity. "After that, everyone knows it's real," Trump says after Walters musses his 'do like a flirty coed. ("I still think it's a hairpiece," Babs said later.) 2. Most Shocking Death: Boardwalk Empire's Nucky Thompson proves he's no longer "half a gangster" in the HBO drama's second season finale. After Nucky marries Margaret to keep her from testifying against him, he vows to turn over a new leaf. But that all goes out the window when, after an apologetic Jimmy Darmody successfully stages the suicide of the last witness in Nucky's trial, Nucky returns the favor by putting two bullets into Jimmy's face as payback for trying to have Nucky killed. Jimmy may have seen it coming (he gave his son his dog tags, after all), but we couldn't believe the show actually went for it. R.I.P., Jimmy. 1. Best Birth: We're pretty certain we'll never see another TV birth like Vivien's haunting, bloody delivery on American Horror Story. It was gross enough when we learned that one twin was essentially eating the other while they cooked in mom's womb. But watching as Constance distributed the newborns to ghostly, not-at-all-stable adoptive parents made it all the more heartbreaking. Hopefully, Ghost Vivien will get some much-needed peace now from her sniveling wimp of a husband. Likely? Nah. What were your top moments?

'Rock Of Ages' Trailer: Tom Cruise Kills It, States Adam Shankman

Get yourself a load of the "Rock Old range" trailer, will ya. Holy energy ballads, large hair, leather pants and bad options. There's Julianne Hough being Julianne Hough, Russell Brand being Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin being Alec Baldwin because he's scene-stealing up bad weather, Catherine Zeta Manley likely killing it a very uptight mother/PTA leader type and Tom Cruise. A extended-haired, shirtless, sort-of singing Tom Cruise. MTV News was sufficiently fortunate to get snag a few moments of director Adam Shankman's time to discuss a clip, what he expects to tease out over the following six several days and why Cruise will be a kid in the old fashion old fashion candy store on set. "The finest question mark in [putting the teaser trailer together] was Tom and the way we presented Tom, and prove to the world without getting too detailed about all the story lines, because that could be a three and a half minute trailer. She's most inside the movie but we preferred to construct the excitement of seeing him," Shankman referred to about why we just see brief glimpses of Cruise as rocker Stacee Jaxx. "I'd imagine we'll get little glimpses of him singing, in the [first] teaser we didn't might like to do that. It's exciting, it's the large mystery." Shankman also states Cruise certainly had most likely probably the most fun along with his character. "I have not met anybody on any movie I've ever done, including as choreographer, therefore we like 70 some odd movies now, which in fact had more fun than Tom. In my opinion Tom was like a kid in the old fashion old fashion candy store because nobody had ever asked for him to accomplish anything similar to this before and what Tom Cruise loves to do are challenges and obstacles, he loves learning a new challenge, he loves to work," Shankman mentioned. "He switched up early each day, he am present, it absolutely was amazing." More youthful crowd guarantees everyone else a lot of fun, come June 2012. "This movie is only a giant party," Shankman guaranteed. "It's a bring-your-pals giant party." Reveal everything you considered the "Rock old range" trailer inside the comments and also on Twitter!

Hilary Swank On Her Behalf Ill-Fated Chechnya Trip: I Ought To Know Where Im Going

Hilary Swank tonight began her image-rehabilitating campaign following a disastrous compensated appearance at tyrannical Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov’s birthday celebration with a vacation to the Tonight Show With Jay Leno. The backlash in the October 5 appearance in Grozny brought to Swank firing her manager and many of her agents. The fallout also incorporated her PR firm 42West apparently shedding her over disagreement the way the aftermath of her embarrassing stint ought to be handled, therefore it’s unclear who reserved her appearance on Leno tonight. Inside it, Swank attempted to correct a few of the damage by declaring lack of knowledge. She ultimately required sensibly on her blunder but left some blame on her reps too. “Human privileges organizations had arrived at to warn me before I went, but I didn't get individuals alerts, they werent distributed to me,” she stated inside a subtle jab at her reps. “The final point here is I ought to know where I’m going and really should fare better research.” Watch Swank’s account from the occasions within the online video below. Strangely enough, the clip stops right before the finish from the conversation, which, in typical Leno fashion, didn’t incorporate a single tough question. Within the left-out part, after speaking about how exactly little she understood about Chechnya and it is government prior to the incident and just how much she's learned since, Swank stated, “I really didnt realize that Chechnya was outside of Russia.” The statement is sort of puzzling because, while being its very own republic, Chechnya continues to be part of the Spain.

New John Carter Trailer Online

'That don't look like a fair fight...'After some new pics and that fresh poster, the all-out publicity barrage for John Carter continued apace on Wednesday with the arrival of the second official trailer. Take a gander below.Finding Nemo/Wall-E veteran Andrew Stanton has been slaving over the film for a couple of years now, blending studio work with desert location shooting and some hefty CGI to bring Edgar Rice Burroughs' tale of a dispirited Civil War veteran (Taylor Kitsch) who finds himself transported to the planet Barsoom. Or, as we like to call it on Earth, Mars.Once there, he quickly becomes mixed up in a power struggle and finds both friends (including Willem Dafoe's multi-limbed Tars Tarkas) and enemies (Mark Strong's Matai Shang, from the looks of this trailer). Cue conflict! Cue big air ships! Cue creatures of all sizes! The first promo was more about mood than plot and while there's still not a lot of story on show here, there's at least a little more in terms of what Carter himself faces. And because we're getting closer to the movie's release date, there's more CG eye candy on display.Carter faces a big challenge to win over both fans of the book and newcomers who hear Barsoom and think it's a new Russ Meyer tribute pic. We'll find out how well it fares when it arrives here on March 9.[[Poll558]]

Paramount In Talks To Acquire Fantasy Novel Daughter Of Smoke And Bone

EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures is negotiating a deal in the $700,000 range to acquire screen rights to Daughter Of Smoke and Bone, the Laini Taylor novel that was published late September by Little, Brown Books For Young Readers. There has been heightened interest in the book among studios–I’ve heard two others made bids–because of the potential for a big scale, visual effects-driven fantasy film that can connect with a young audience. The protagonist is a 17-year old art student who is sent by her awful father on travels across the globe to collect teeth for an unspecified but creepy purpose. This leads her to an encounter with an angel and revelations about her family that lead her into adventures involving otherworldly beings. The deal’s not done, but the book’s being brokered by Jane Putch (who’s attached as exec producer) and attorney Peter Nelson.
